Crucial Permanent Tweak

Increase NVIDIA Shader Cache Size to 10GB or Unlimited

By default, Windows sets the NVIDIA shader cache limit to Driver Default (approx. 4GB). Modern games like Call of Duty, Cyberpunk 2077, and The Finals compile upwards of 6GB to 12GB of shaders. When the 4GB cap is reached, Windows continuously deletes old shaders, forcing your GPU to re-compile them during gunfights, causing severe 1% low micro-stutters.

Step 1

Open NVIDIA Control Panel

Right-click your desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.

Step 2

Manage 3D Settings

Navigate to 3D Settings → Manage 3D Settings → Global Settings.

Step 3

Set to 10GB or Unlimited

Scroll down to Shader Cache Size, change from Driver Default to 10 GB (or Unlimited on 1TB+ SSDs), and click Apply.

Technical Primer: What Is Shader Compilation Stutter?

In modern low-level graphics APIs like DirectX 12 and Vulkan, game engines compile high-level shader code into machine-executable Pipeline State Objects (PSOs) tailored specifically to your exact GPU architecture and driver version.

Why Do Games Stutter After Updating Drivers?

When you install a new NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready or AMD Adrenalin driver, old pre-compiled PSOs become invalid. If Windows or the driver fails to overwrite corrupted chunks, your GPU halts rendering for 50-200ms every time an uncompiled particle or shader appears on screen.

Will Purging the Cache Delete My Save Games?

Absolutely not. Shader caches only store compiled mathematical lighting instructions. No game accounts, keybinds, settings, or progress are ever stored in DXCache or GLCache directories.

Frequently Asked Questions (Shader Caching)

How often should I clear my GPU shader cache?

Only clear your shader cache when experiencing stuttering after a graphics driver update, after a major seasonal game patch, or when switching between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. There is no need for daily purging.

Why will my game have a minor stutter on the first launch after clearing?

During the initial 2-3 minutes of entering a map, the game recompiles clean, fresh PSOs. Once compiled, frame pacing permanently stabilizes with near-zero 1% low drops.
