Interactive Clean Installation Procedure

Step 1: Download Official Driver & DDU Portable

Before entering Safe Mode, pre-download the official WHQL driver and Wagnardsoft Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU). Store both files on your Desktop or Downloads folder.

Step 2: Prevent Windows Update Driver Overwrite

Windows automatically downloads an outdated 6-month-old generic display driver the second you reboot. Run this command in CMD as Administrator to disable driver auto-install.

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /v "ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Step 3: Disconnect Internet & Reboot into Safe Mode

Disconnect your Ethernet cable or disable Wi-Fi. Run the command below to boot your system directly into Safe Mode without holding Shift or spamming F8.

Enter Safe Mode Command:
bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal && shutdown /r /t 0
Return to Normal Mode (Run after DDU finishes):
bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot

Step 4: Launch DDU in Safe Mode & Clean

Open Display Driver Uninstaller.exe in Safe Mode:

  • Select device type: GPU
  • Select device: NVIDIA
  • Click "Clean and restart" (Recommended).
  • Note: If switching from AMD to NVIDIA or vice-versa, clean the old vendor driver first without restarting, then clean the new one and restart.

Step 5: Perform Clean Driver Installation

Once your PC reboots into normal Windows (with low base resolution):

  • Run the driver installer downloaded in Step 1.
  • Select Custom (Advanced) installation.
  • Check the box marked "Perform a clean installation".
  • Optional: For NVIDIA, you can use NVCleanstall to strip out telemetry, Shield wireless controller services, and unwanted background telemetry.

Step 6: Purge Shader Cache & Reconnect Internet

Reconnect your network cable or Wi-Fi. Run the command below in CMD as Administrator to wipe out corrupted DirectX shader caches so your games compile fresh, stutter-free shaders.

rmdir /s /q "%LOCALAPPDATA%\NVIDIA\DXCache" & rmdir /s /q "%LOCALAPPDATA%\D3DSCache"

1-Click Batch Helper

Automates Windows driver block & shader purge

Don't want to enter manual registry commands? Download our pre-built non-destructive batch helper file, right-click, and select "Run as administrator".

Still Getting Black Screens or Signal Dropouts?

Over 40% of recurrent "GPU Driver Timeout" and monitor signal drops on 144Hz - 360Hz displays are caused by cheap, non-certified DisplayPort cables that fail under high bandwidth.

VESA Certified 8K DisplayPort 1.4 Cable (32.4 Gbps)

Eliminates DSC flickering, HDR handshaking delays, and mid-game black screens.

Frequently Asked Questions About DDU & Clean GPU Drivers

Why is Safe Mode strictly necessary for DDU?

In normal Windows, driver DLLs and kernel services (nvlddmkm.sys, amdkmdag.sys) are locked by running background processes. Safe Mode runs with basic generic display drivers, allowing DDU to remove locked registry keys and binaries without permissions errors.

How often should I perform a clean driver install?

You do not need to use DDU for routine incremental updates. Use DDU when swapping hardware (e.g., upgrading from AMD to NVIDIA), experiencing persistent BSODs (VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE), or when game engines throw DirectX device removed errors.

Does using DDU void my graphics card warranty?

No. DDU only modifies Windows software registry keys and file system directories. It does not flash GPU BIOS firmware or alter physical hardware clock states.

Why does my screen resolution drop after running DDU?

This is normal! When proprietary drivers are wiped, Windows falls back to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Once you install the fresh driver in Step 5, your native resolution, 144Hz/240Hz refresh rate, and multi-monitor setups will immediately restore.
